About Cholesyramine and Zinc Oxide for Diaper Rash:

The combination of zinc oxide and cholestyramine is frequently prescribed by physicians to treat diaper rash in babies. Each ingredient attacks diaper rash issues from a different angle, and Davis Islands Pharmacy compound these two chemicals into one, easy-to-apply ointment.

Zinc oxide is an inorganic compound that’s widely used as an additive in numerous materials and products. It is also used to treat and prevent diaper rash and other minor skin irritations, like burns and cuts. The zinc oxide forms a barrier on the skin to protect it from irritants and moisture.

When high concentrations of bile acids are present in a child’s stool, it can irritate the anus and buttocks in a manner similar to the skin irritation experienced by patients with ostomies. That’s where cholestyramine comes in handy.Cholestyramine ointment is used to treat buttocks rash and anal excoriation in an infant. It’s main function is to prevent skin irritation, which is especially helpful for ostomy patients. A bile acid sequestrant, cholestyramine can irreversibly bind the bile when applied topically and bring relief to the child. Cholestyramine reduces the action of bile acids in the large intestine, which has the effect of reducing diarrhea and diaper rash symptoms.

Closely follow the instructions given by your doctor. To treat diaper rash, use this topical ointment each time the diaper is changed. Particularly, it is important to apply the medication at bedtime or whenever there will be a long period of time between diaper changes.

This compound medication is for use on the skin only. Be sure to follow all instructions on the product package, information sheets, or as otherwise instructed by your physician. Should an issue arise of which you are uncertain, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Ensure this compound does not get in your eyes. If you do get the compounded ointment in your eyes, flush well with water and contact your doctor immediately. If your doctor has prescribed a compound of zinc oxide and cholestyramine, they have made the determination that the benefit to you or your child are greater than the risk of side effects. Most people using this medication do not experience serious side effects. However, tell your doctor right away if uncommon side effects occur, including: skin irritation, redness or rash on the application site, or other reactions.

You should expect the compound to start working within 12 hours after first application. Be sure to consult your doctor if the diaper rash worsens, does not improve, or persists for more than 7 days, and also if it returns again after a few days.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. You should stop use of this compound and call your doctor if your child experiences rectal bleeding or continued pain.
